An epoch is defined as an extended period of time, typically characterized by a distinctive development or by a memorable series of events – and Scott Hansen, leader of the band Tycho, named their album Epoch with just that in mind. The last instalment in a trilogy, Epoch is the culmination of more than a decade’s work that has seen the band evolving and maturing through two sublime releases Dive (2011) and Awake (2014), fully illustrating Hansen’s transition from a delicate solo performer to the iconic frontman of a powerful multi-layered live band.
Epoch leverages the sonic aesthetic of Dive’s down-tempo vintage-style synthesizers and beautiful melodies while drawing on the kinetic energy of Awake’s progressive composition and organic instrumentation. For Hansen, “Epoch is basically coming full circle. All the lessons of Dive and Awake were applied and then expanded upon.”
Once complete, it was essential for him to release Epoch as a surprise album, “I wanted to be more connected to the people consuming the music. There is a kind of visceral fulfillment you get from sharing something that you’ve just created with other people”.
In October 2017 audiences will be able to share in Tycho’s remarkable achievement at Roundhouse, a venue primed for such a singular performance.
Support comes from Vessels who have just released their latest body of work, entitled The Great Distraction. The album sees the band “moving almost exclusively into electronic music, but where the album excels is instead of totally dismissing their post-rock past, coming up with a record which is post-rock, just performed electronically. They achieve this with flying colours.” – The Line Of Best Fit
