Norwegian artist and writer Jenny Hval has developed her distinct take on intimate sound since the release of her debut album in 2006. For her last two solo albums, 2013’s Innocence Is Kinky and 2015’s Apocalypse, girl, Hval’s debut for Sacred Bones, she has received thoughtful and widespread international acclaim for her fascinating voice, singular delivery and markedly non-traditional arrangements which incorporate elements of poetry, prose writing, performance art, and film.
Jenny Hval’s Blood Bitch was released to rave reviews back in September, including best new music from Pitchfork, four stars from the Guardian and a fully deserved 9/10 from Line of Best Fit. On the album, Hval herself says:
“This is my most fictional and most personal album. It’s also the first album where I’ve started reconnecting with the goth and metal scene I started out playing in many years ago, by remembering the drony qualities of Norwegian Black Metal. It’s an album of vampires, lunar cycles, sticky choruses, and the smell of warm leaves and winter.”
After a mesmerising show at Oslo Hackney this October, Jenny Hval will play Rich Mix early next year.
Forming in early 2012, Manchester (via London) based duo Virginia Wing take their name from Grace Slick’s mother. Their new record ‘Forward Constant Motion’ expands the deep and varied sonic palette displayed on debut album ‘Measures Of Joy’, giving way to a sprawling amalgamation of experimental pop tracks with texture, depth and nuance; daring and progressive and drawing as much from the compressed thump of Homework-era Daft Punk as the languid new age-isms of Laurie Anderson to create a bold and inventive modern pop record.
